How to calculate

Enter the paved area and the compacted thickness. Thickness is usually in inches. Use the mix density from the plant or a typical 145 lb/ft³ if the mix sheet is not on hand. The calculator converts thickness to feet, finds cubic feet, multiplies by density, then divides by 2,000 pounds per ton.

Formula

Volume (ft³) = area (ft²) × thickness (ft). Weight (lb) = volume × density (lb/ft³). Tons = weight ÷ 2,000. Waste multiplies the neat tonnage.

Worked example

Example: 1000 sf at 2 inches and 145 pcf

  1. 1. Convert thickness to feet

    2 in ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft

  2. 2. Volume in cubic feet

    1,000 ft² × 0.1667 ft = 166.6667 ft³

  3. 3. Weight in pounds

    166.6667 ft³ × 145 lb/ft³ = 24,166.6667 lb

  4. 4. Convert to tons

    24,166.67 lb ÷ 2,000 = 12.0833 tons

  5. 5. Apply waste factor

    12.0833 × (1 + 0%) = 12.0833 tons

What density should I use for asphalt?

Hot-mix asphalt is often around 145 lb/ft³ compacted. Use the job mix formula or plant ticket when you have it. Open-graded and base mixes can be lighter.

How many square feet will a ton of asphalt cover?

At 2 inches and 145 lb/ft³, one ton covers about 83 square feet. Coverage falls as thickness or density increases.

Is this compacted or loose tons?

The formula uses compacted thickness and compacted density. Order extra if the plant quotes mix before compaction or if the existing surface is irregular.
