Paving & Base

Area, tonnage, and riprap tools for paving and armor.

What these paving calculators are for

Use this group when a takeoff starts as plan area and you need square yards, hot-mix tons, crushed-base tons, or riprap volume. Area is not tonnage: thickness and compacted density still have to be applied before you order mix or stone.

Which tool to open

Paving area is length × width (plus area waste). Asphalt tonnage is compacted hot-mix from area, lift thickness, and mix density. Base-rock tonnage uses the same prism idea with aggregate density, not HMA density. Riprap is armor stone from length, width, thickness, and a tons-per-yard factor. Loose millings and RAP are not the hot-mix calculator.

Field assumptions that change the order

Enter compacted thickness, not the loose lift before rolling. Density belongs on the mix sheet or quarry ticket; 145 lb/ft³ is a common HMA default and 125 lb/ft³ is a common crushed-base default, not a specification. Waste on area tools is overlaps; waste on tonnage tools is yield and irregular subgrade.
