Bedding Calculator

Calculate bedding or pipe-zone material from trench length, bedding width, and bedding thickness. Add waste for over-excavation and compaction settlement.

Pipe or trench length

Usually the trench width at bedding grade

Enter your values, then press Calculate.

How to calculate

Enter the pipe run length, the width of the bedding (often trench width), and the bedding thickness below or around the pipe. Thickness is usually in inches on the detail.

Formula

Volume (ft³) = length (ft) × width (ft) × thickness (ft). Cubic yards = ft³ ÷ 27. Waste multiplies the neat volume.

Common use cases

  • Class B or C bedding takeoffs
  • Pipe-zone sand or gravel
  • Checking a bedding detail against trench width
  • Haul tickets vs plan quantity

Worked example

Example: 100 ft of 24 in wide, 6 in thick bedding

  1. 1. Neat volume

    100 ft × 2 ft × 0.5 ft = 100 ft³

  2. 2. Cubic yards

    100 ÷ 27 = 3.7037 yd³

FAQ

Is this the full pipe zone?

Only if you enter the pipe-zone thickness from the detail. For bedding-only, use the thickness below the pipe invert.

Should I subtract the pipe OD?

This estimate uses a rectangular prism. It does not subtract pipe displacement. That is conservative for ordering material.
