Excavation
Trench cut, backfill, spoils, shrink/swell, and truckloads.
What these excavation calculators are for
A trench takeoff is several different volumes. Bank yards are the in-place cut. Loose yards are what you haul after swell. Backfill is what you put back, sometimes minus pipe displacement. Truckloads convert a cubic-yard quantity into whole loads.
Which tool to open
Trench excavation is length × width × depth in bank yards. Bedding is only the bedding thickness, not the full cut. Backfill is the refill prism and can deduct a circular pipe. Trench spoils applies swell and optional truck count to a bank volume you already have. Shrink/swell converts bank to loose and to compacted fill. Truckload is the last step: loose (or import) yards into 10–18 yd³ trucks.
Measurement assumptions
Width is excavated width, not pipe OD. Swell and shrink come from the geotech report or past loads — the calculators do not guess a soil name. Trucks haul loose material; do not enter bank yards into the truckload tool unless you have already applied swell.
